Another AWESOME 99Cent Only Store find!
Sunday, April 11, 2010
Ok, so I think I'm addicted to this store now!
Saturday (of course it rained all day) we were off to get some plants and pots to make our butterfly gardens. The kids had built butterfly houses at the FREE Home Depot Kids Workshop (the first Sat. of every month) and we needed some pots to plant butterfly attracting plants in, so off to the 99Cent Only Store we went! Hey, if it was raining, at least we could get the pots and decorate them, right?
So my budget for this whole project is $20. We bought 6 pots (2 for each kiddo) and came home and using colored Sharpie Markers, they decorated away! I thought this would be easier than paint (which I did not have) and they could control the pens better. They spent an hour drawing and coloring on both the pots and the houses and had a great time! Now (hoping for no rain today) we have gorgeous pots and need some pretty plants to go with them!
Another AWESOME find at the 99Cent Only Store yesterday was a Walmart KING SIZE bedskirt for only 99c!!! They still have these on their website too! Mine is a khaki color, but it is the Mainstay brand and is in perfect condition! Now it's only 180 thread count, but for a bedskirt, who cares!!! 99c for a KING SIZE people! I've been needing one for years!!!
For the plants, I got in on the $25 FREE gift card deal to Houston Garden Center and so we have $25 to spend! Actually $30 because I also have a $5 off $30 purchase!!! We also need some potting soil and veggie plants.
I totally recommend seeing if you have one near you!!! It's so fun just to see what all they have!!!
My new FAVORITE place to shop!
Thursday, April 8, 2010
Since starting work several weeks ago, I have been too busy (well, lazy is more like it) to do my usual super copuoning. I actually have felt guilty about it too. Then I read a couple of posts on other coupon blogs about "it's ok to shop without coupons and take a break"! So you know what?? I did take a break today and actually went to the store WITHOUT coupons! (plus they don't take them at this store, too bad...there would be lots of great deals that way!!)
I also have been reading alot about the 99 Cent Only store and thought I would check it out. Now the closest ones to me were both 30 minutes away with NO traffic and I was planning on going after work and school. I thought traffic is better than shopping on a Saturday!
I was pleasantly surprised at the size and selection of this store! They had all the stuff a usual dollar type store would have plus a whole grocery store side complete with a frozen, fridge, and produce dept! Some of the items in there I wouldn't pay a $1 for, like canned goods, but boxes of cereal, bags of chips, 2.5 lbs of bananas I will totally go for!
The best things I found were stalks of celery (for ants on a log), a bag of stirfry veggies, a 1/2 gallon of PUMPKIN ice cream by Dryers (totally out of season, but still in date!), and the best yet...2 lb boxes of strawberries each a $1!!! YES, I GOT 6 POUNDS OF STRAWBERRIES FOR $3!!! I spent $51 and loaded up on snacks, and fruit/veg only!
Since my grocery budget is $50 a week for the 5 of us, I think I will "take a break" once a month and head on over to the 99 Cents ONLY store and stock up on snacks and some great veggie/fruit deals!
Trying new Meal Planning site...
Sunday, April 4, 2010
I'm a huge fan of meal planning, but you just get burnt out after a while! A while back, I found this site and I'm going to give it a try! Now I have picky eaters here and honestly, I don't like to cook, but since this site coordinates with the grocery store sales, I thought I would give it a try!

Let me know if you've used it before! I'd love to hear some feedback!

31 Days to a Better Grocery Budget, USING CASH ONLY!
Tuesday, March 23, 2010
HERE'S ANOTHER PART OF THE 31 DAYS TO A BETTER GROCERY BUDGET FROM
THIS IS A SCARY ONE!!! I DO THIS NOW, BUT GETTING STARTED ONLY USING CASH WAS VERY SCARY FOR ME! WHAT IF I WENT OVER??? WELL, I'M HERE TO TELL YOU, IT WILL DEFINITELY MAKE YOU STICK TO YOUR LIST!!!
Missed the first posts this series? Read them here.
Up until this point, the posts in this series have been pretty non-controversial. But today, that’s all changing, because I’m going to make a bold statement:You will very likely see significant savings on your grocery bill if you only shop with cash.
I know all of you “But-I’m-So-Responsible-With-My-Credit-Card” people probably aren’t going to be happy with me for saying this, but I really believe that. You see, when you shop with a credit card (or even a debit card, for that matter!) you can have your budget in your head and you can do the best to stick with it when you check out, but it’s so much easier to go just a little bit over here and there when you’re swiping. You can justify that $2 you went over your budget to buy something which was a “great deal” when paying with your card.
$2 might not seem like much, but if you spend $2 to $3 more on groceries every week, that’s adds up to around $130 in extra spending over a year’s time!
Paying with cash forces you to stick to your budget.
When I know that all I have to use at checkout is the cash in my grocery budget envelope, you better believe I carefully evaluate every impulse purchase or great deal I come across: “Do I really need this?” “Is this in the budget?”Sometimes, it truly is a great deal and I have the money in my cash envelope to pay for it so it goes in the cart. Other times, I decide it’s a good enough deal that I skip buying something else on my list that we can do without in order to afford it. Or, many times, I put it back on the shelf.
The Cash-Only Challenge
Maybe you’re one of those extremely responsible–and very rare!–people who can stick to your budget while swiping a card. If you are, kuddos to you! However, if you find yourself struggling financially and wishing you could figure out why your grocery budget is so high, can I challenge you to take a Cash-Only Challenge for 3 months and see if it impacts your grocery spending over the course of a three-month period?
Here’s how the Cash-Only Challenge works:
1) Commit to only spend what is in your grocery envelope for the next 3 months.
2) Go to the bank and withdraw cash in the amount of your pre-determined Grocery Budget. Put this cash in an envelope and keep it in a safe place. For more on cash-only shopping, read The Envelope System Experiment.
3) Leave your credit/debit cards/checkbook at home and only bring your cash envelope and a calculator with you to the grocery store.
4) Calculate your purchases on the calculator as you add them to your cart. This will motivate you to carefully evaluate all purchases, will make you aware of how much items actually cost, encourage you to look for the best deal, and force you to get creative if your list is longer than you have room for in the budget.
5) Pay with cash when you checkout and see significant grocery savings–hopefully!
6) Decide you’ll never go back to paying with your credit/debit card. Well, okay so you might not get quite that drastic, but I can almost guarantee you that going cash-only for a short-time will have taught you something worthwhile!
Menu Planning- 31 Days to a Better Grocery Budget Part 1 and Part 2
Thursday, March 18, 2010
I am combining the next 2 parts as one post. See the original posts at www.moneysavingmom.com!
So now that you know some of the benefits of menu-planning, I thought it’d be helpful to share some suggestions for planning a budget-friendly menu. However, please remember that there is no right or wrong way to plan a menu. These are just suggestions–take what works for your family, and leave the rest!
For instance, last week I discovered that I had cream cheese, canned tomatoes, and noodles on hand. So I made this lasagna as part of Freezer Cooking Day.
Maybe you open up your freezer and find chicken and frozen broccoli and you open up your cupboard and see a bag of rice. Well, you have the beginnings of Chicken Broccoli Rice Casserole. Just add cheese and cream of chicken soup to your grocery list (or make your own Homemade Cream Soup) and you have everything you need for one dinner that week.
One great resource for coming up with recipes based upon what you already have on hand is by using the Ingredient Search feature from AllRecipes. Type in the ingredients you have and those you don’t have, and it will pull up a list of recipes you can make.
Two other websites you can consult for recipes based upon ingredients you have on hand are SuperCook and Recipe Matcher.
Most grocery store chains have their weekly sale fliers available online. If not, you will often receive a copy in the mail. Or, you could even pick one up at the store if you’re going to be driving right by it.
When you’re in the middle of planning your menu and grocery list, quickly browse through these sale fliers and see if there are any exceptional deals on things you need or things you will use in the next few months. Most of the time, the hottest deals of the week are listed predominantly in the front page of the flier. Oftentimes, these front-page deals are “loss-leaders”. (“Loss-leaders” are deals which the store is actually breaking even– or losing money on! They are designed to be good enough to “bait” you into shopping at that store.)
Don’t neglect to look through the full flier, though. Sometimes there are great deals which are hidden on the middle pages. However, remember that just because something is listed in the sales flier it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a great deal. Over time, you’ll start learning what are the “rock-bottom” prices for items you buy and how often they go on sale in your area.
You’ve “shopped” your cupboards, consulted the sales fliers and surveyed your coupons, now it’s time to get down to business with menu-planning. But first off, let me re-iterate a very important point:
Sometimes, I have lots of extra ingredients to work with, there are lots of sales, and I have numerous coupons. When that happens, it’s pretty easy to pull together a week’s worth of meals without a lot of extra thought.
I’ve found that once-a-month Freezer Cooking makes menu planning a breeze. In fact, many weeks, I can just write out breakfast, lunch, and dinner ideas on this form here, and we’re good to go for the week. I use the sheet for ideas, but I don’t necessarily follow it to a tee. In our home, flexibility and creativity is okay–provided it doesn’t mean any extra trips to the store!
However, at times, my cupboards and freezers are pretty bare, the sales are sparse, and my coupon box is relatively empty. If that’s the case, I see how much grocery money I have to work with, and I usually pull out some cookbooks to get the wheels in my head going. Or I’ll go to one of my favorite food blogs (like Tammy’s Recipes) for ideas. You can also check out Menu Plan Monday for a plethora of menu ideas from around the blogosphere.
Or, you could have pre-established themes for dinners each week. Tsh, over at SimpleMom, does this and here’s an example of what her Themed Menu Plan has looked like:
M0ndays - pasta
Tuesdays - soup, salad, and/or sandwiches
Wednesdays - stir fry
Thursdays - crock pot
Fridays - pizza
Saturdays - something new
Sundays - something easy
It might seem like a daunting task at first–especially if this is all new to you!–but don’t be overwhelmed. Do the best you can do and remember that it’s never going to be absolutely perfect. Over time, though, you’ll likely begin to realize significant savings just by taking a few extra steps and putting the effort forth to make a plan.
Meal Planning Worksheet :: This brainstorming form contains spaces to write down store deals, coupons, items on hand, and recipes that can be made from those items.
Shopping List :: Contains space for the items to purchase, the cost of the item, whether there is a coupon for it, and how much the coupon is for. Also includes a space for notes where you can record extra information about your shopping trip.
Two-Store Shopping List :: Two separate shopping lists on one page, each of which includes space for the items to purchase, the cost of the item, and whether there is a coupon for it. Also includes a space for notes where you can record extra information about your shopping trip.
So now that you know some of the benefits of menu-planning, I thought it’d be helpful to share some suggestions for planning a budget-friendly menu. However, please remember that there is no right or wrong way to plan a menu. These are just suggestions–take what works for your family, and leave the rest!
1) “Shop” Your Cupboards
I always start menu-planning by looking in my freezer, refrigerator, and cupboards. This simple exercise often yields a great deal of inspiration.

Two other websites you can consult for recipes based upon ingredients you have on hand are SuperCook and Recipe Matcher.
2) Consult the Sales Fliers
Once you feel like you’re getting the hang of planning your menu based upon what you have on hand, you’re ready to move onto the next level of menu-planning–planning your menu based upon what’s on sale at your local store(s). This is where you really start to see the savings happening!
3) Survey Your Coupons
Once I’ve gotten a good idea of what I have on hand and what’s on sale at my nearby stores, I pull out my coupon box to match up coupons with the sales and see if I have any other coupons I want to be sure and use (such as high-value coupons or coupons for free items). I put these coupons in a stack and then it’s time to make my menu plan–which we’ll talk about in more detail in the next post in this series. You’ve “shopped” your cupboards, consulted the sales fliers and surveyed your coupons, now it’s time to get down to business with menu-planning. But first off, let me re-iterate a very important point:
There’s not a perfect way to plan a menu.
Everyone is going to plan their menu a little bit differently. As I said yesterday, there’s no right or wrong way to menu plan. What matters is that you do it, and that it works for your family. For the record, I do it a little differently each time I plan–depending upon how much time and inspiration I have and what our plans for the week look like.Sometimes, I have lots of extra ingredients to work with, there are lots of sales, and I have numerous coupons.
Or I’ll go to one of my favorite food blogs (like Tammy’s Recipes) for ideas. You can also check out Menu Plan Monday for a plethora of menu ideas from around the blogosphere.
Find a method that works for you.
You might find it helpful to take 30 minutes and make a list of 30 meals your family loves to serve as inspiration if you’re ever feeling a lack of creativity while menu-planning.Or, you could have pre-established themes for dinners each week. Tsh, over at SimpleMom, does this and here’s an example of what her Themed Menu Plan has looked like:
M0ndays - pasta

Menu Planning- 31 Days to a Better Grocery Budget
Missed the first posts this series? Read them here on Money Saving Mom.
Not only do I believe having a set amount to spend at the grocery store is imperative for lowering your grocery budget, but I also believe menu-planning is a must.
Menu Planning Saves You Stress and Frustration
Do you dread 5 p.m. because it’s when you have to try to pull something together for dinner or feel guilty about ordering takeout yet again? Do you often find yourself running to the store at the last-minute in a frazzled state rushing through the aisles and throwing random things into your cart in hopes it will magically create a five-course dinner?
The truth is, you could throw away the 5 p.m. dread and almost completely eradicate the frazzled last-minute grocery store trips if you sat down at the beginning of the week and made a menu plan.
Menu Planning Saves You Money
I can’t even begin to calculate how much we’ve saved over the years through the simple act of menu planning.By planning ahead and buying all the groceries we’ll need for the week in one shopping trip, we save numerous trips to the store throughout the week. In addition, when you have a plan in place for what you’re supposed to be eating each meal and you’ve already purchased the ingredients for those recipes, it’s a lot harder to justify chucking the plan for takeout.
Menu planning is not rocket science and it only has to take a few minutes each week, but it can really make a difference in your life. Be sure to check out our brand-new Printable Menu Forms Pack which you can download here for free!
Walgreens, CVS, and the NIGHTMARE Target run for 3/15
Monday, March 15, 2010
i made a quick trip to walgreens and cvs today and then the NIGHTMARE trip to target trying to use up some coupons that will expire at the end of the month and to rack up on some freebies.
here's my wags trip:
2 transactions
#1 colgate toothpaste 3.99 - $1off mq = 2.99
2 wags brand drinks $.79 each (not pictured)
used $3 rr and paid oop 1.57
#2 same items with no $1off coupon, so my oop was $2.57 on that one. if i wouldn't have had my kiddos with me, i would have gotten out $3.16 cheaper without buying us all those drinks!
got back 2 $4 register rewards! (used $6 worth and got back $8 worth!)
CVS:
Then i ran to cvs to get some free right guard!
they were 2/$5 and i used 2 $1.50 off coupons bringing it down to $2. i used my $2 ECB and got back another $2 ECB.
then for transaction 2 i got an herbal essence shampoo $2.99, a herbal essence hairspray for $2.99 and a cvs paper towel for $1.49. i used a buy the shampoo and get the hair care item free coupon, so that took off $2.99 and then the "magic coupon machine" that you scan your card with printed out a $1 off a cvs paper towel, so that made them be $.49. i also used a $1 off the shampoo coupon, bringing my total to $. 52!!!
not bad for 2 deoderants, a shampoo, a hairspray and a roll of paper towels! plus i got back another $1 ECB!
and then i went to target. this was a NIGHTMARE trip!
i had saved up tons of $1 off coupons that had no size restrictions on them, so i was going to load up on some travel size items plus a bunch of regular size items that were all going to end up free. i also had some items on my list that were not ending up free to cover the overage in case i got a cashier that didn't adjust the coupons when she scanned them. WELL...
i went to the line with the guy that looked like the type that wouldn't give me a problem for having such a huge stack of coupons. boy was i wrong! he was so worried about going to lunch on time, that he quickly scanned all my items and then started just scanning my coupons. well of course, he was doing some target store coupons first and then the manufactures ones so they were beeping. he got really frustrated and told his replacement when she came up behind him to just take over. well, she was totally over whelmed because he had just spreaded the coupons out everywhere and she didn't know what he had scanned and what he didn't. so i told her to just void it out and i would hand her each coupon as she scanned the items. i had several of the same items and numerous coupons that were the same. i thought that would make it easier. so she voided it out and scanned my first item. then i handed her the coupons. it was a $1 off and the item was $.97. before she even had a chance to adjust it down, the asst. manager came up behind her and proceeded to say as loudly as she could WE CAN'T TAKE A COUPON FOR MORE THAN THE PRICE OF THE ITEM MA'AM. i said, yes you can, you need to adjust it down to the price of the item. she proceeded to try to argue with me and when i said i had the corporate coupon policy with me, she said YOU DON'T NEED TO PULL THAT OUT FOR ME. so i politely said, just take all this stuff back and i will take my coupons somewhere else.
i then went up to the service desk and asked for the store manager. after waiting 15 minutes for her to finally come out (at this point, i had been in target for almost 2 hours WITH my kids), i explained to her what happened and she looked at my coupons and said, ma'am, you are right. let's go get your stuff. she took all my stuff (the other lady had thrown in a basket in the isle behind the registers) and started checking me out. then the asst. manager comes to the service desk and leans over the manager's shoulder and says, SHE CAN'T USE THOSE AND GET THAT STUFF WITHOUT PAYING. (something close to that, insinuating i was stealing). i politely told her and the manager that "i'm sorry that i am good at saving my family money. you know that target get's reembursed for each coupon i use PLUS $.08 for every one of them?" the asst manager makes an ugly face and stomps off. the manager said, you sure know what you are doing, huh? and i proudly said YES I DO!
the store manager went above and beyond taking care of me! even after i sorted out each coupon and what it went with and then she rang me up, my total (which some of the items were even less at this target than i was planning) was way higher than it should have been. she carefully went thru the list on the computer and realized that i didn't scan 2 of my $5 off coupons! she fixed the problem and realized that i was actually negetive and so i quickly add two full price items to cover that!
i will be writing corporate and district offices letting them know exactly what happened and how the store manager went above and beyond to keep my business. i could have just not asked for her and went to another target, but i'm glad i didn't! not only did i learn DON'T HAVE A HUGE STACK OF COUPONS THAT NEEDS TO BE ADJUSTED DOWN, but she learned a few things about coupons and i think i actually inspired her to try using them again! she commented that a friend of hers was trying to teach her about them, but she wasn't using them. maybe she will now!
here's what all i got:
I had a $1 off coupon for the following $.97 items (with no size restrictions)
5 johnson's buddies soaps
4 travel size bandaids (2 hello kitty, 2 plain)
2 johnson's baby shapmoos
2 travel size tides
air wick i motions
2 $6 on sale and used 2 $5 off mq and 2 $1 off target printables
2 lightbulbs $2.14 and used 2 $1.50 off prinatble and 1 $1/2
2 travel size right guard $.97 and used a $2/2 mq
toothbrush $1.99 and used $1 off mq and $1 off target printable
rimmel mascara $2.24 and used a $1.50 target and a $1 off mq
2 first aid kits $.97 ea used $1 off mq
2 kid's crest toothpaste $1.49 and used $1 target printable and $.75 mq
1 crest toothpast $2.49 and used a $.75 mq and a $1 target printable
3 boxes of bandaids $1.77 and used $1 mq and $1 off target printable
my total after my nightmare ended up being negative because my target didn't have the items i was planning on getting to cover the overage, so i bought 2 gillette men's body washes for $1.79 ea without a coupon to use it up.
my total for all this was $3.36!!! i saved $88.04 on this purchase!!! AND made target approx $3.20 extra with their $.08 back on every coupon!
i would never suggest going in a store with 40 coupons for one transaction and part of this nightmare is my fault for doing that. i actually was not planning on getting all those items (and i didn't even get the other 7 first aid kits i had coupons for), but i had all three kiddos with me and this was our 4th store of the day. if i would have been by myself, i would have done 2 trips here and another 2 trips in at my other target. i'm sure i overwhelmed the cashier with all those coupons, but being the ocd organized person that i am, i DID have them paired up and in order of the items i purchased! so i WAS trying to make it easy on them. i guess that was my bad!!!
my total for the day is $8.02! i guess saving $116.23 was worth it though!!!
Family Dollar Matchups!!
Sunday, March 14, 2010
If you know me at all, you'll know that i LOVE the dollar stores! We have 3 around here (multiple locations), Family Dollar, Dollar General, and the Dollar Tree. They all have their own coupon policies. I haven't tried couponing there yet, but with this great matchup I found over at Sarah's Deals, I may just give it a go!!!
Family Dollar Matchup 3/14-3/21/10
You can see the Family Dollar Corporate Coupon Policy here. According to my local store- They also allow the combination of manufacturer coupons and store coupons in most cases (they should work, but if the computer doesn't allow it, they won't). My local store wasn't sure why some work and some don't, but most do.
You can find your local store here. They also have their ad and store coupons printable online here, but I wouldn't worry about printing the store coupons, there are always tons of them in store so why waste the ink?
Here are the matchups:

31 Days to a Better Grocery Budget: Yes, You Need a Budget

Another piece of the 31 days to a better grocery budget series brought to you by Money Saving Mom:
31 Days to a Better Grocery Budget: Yes, You Need a Budget
by Crystal on March 2, 2010
“A budget??”I can hear the groans right now. You were all pumped about these great new money-saving ideas you were going to learn and implement from this series; the last thing you wanted to hear about was a boring topic like budgets.
Remember how you promised me yesterday that you were going to stop making excuses and commit to change? Well, setting up a budget is your first opportunity!
Why You Need a Budget
Without a budget in place, all the money you save is pretty superficial. I’d go so far as to say that without a budget in place, bargain-shopping, coupon-clipping and deal-hunting are likely not going to save you any money. In fact, you might be spending more money in an effort to save money–which totally negates the savings, right?A budget gives you the ability to track your spending and saving–and hopefully to see an increase in savings and a decrease in spending. Without a budget in place, your money will just be running through your fingers with no set objectives. A budget gives you parameters and purpose, it gives you boundaries and it gives you freedom to live creatively within those boundaries.
How to Set Up a Workable Grocery Budget
1) Average Your Grocery Spending From the Last 4-8 Weeks
How much have you spent at the grocery store over the last 4-8 weeks? Average that amount out and use it as a basis for your initial grocery budget. Ultimately, you’re likely going to want to whittle it down quite a bit–since saving money is one of the big purposes of having a grocery budget!–but now is not the time to worry about that. It’s a huge step just to start with a concrete budget in place.2) Be Realistic
Don’t put undo pressure on yourself to come up with some crazily-low and impossible-to-stick-with figure for your grocery budget. This is not a contest or a competition and if you want to persevere and see long-lasting benefits, you’ll want to give yourself some breathing room.3) Challenge Yourself to Slowly Lower Your Budget
Over time and with practice, you’ll likely be able to reduce your original grocery budget figure fairly significantly. But just remember: it takes time. You’re not going to cut your grocery bill in half this month. However, if you slowly shave off 5% here and 5% there, within 6-10 months, it’s very possible you can have it lowered by 30-50% or even more.Always give yourself grace, though. If you’re ever feeling frustrated or stressed about it, step back and remind yourself that it’s just a grocery budget. The world’s not going to come to an end if it’s $5 or $10–or even $30 or $50!–more than you’d like it to be.

I can say from personal experience that this workshop will CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!! We did it last year and I honestly don't think we could have made it thru the last few hard months of changing jobs and no income with out it. Dave Ramsey is a SUPER down to earth financial guy who spells it all out in plain English! Extremely motivating and will get you on the track to being DEBT FREE!!!
At one point last year, we had our plan and we were down to only 1 car payment and our mortgage!!! We had a plan that that car (we owed about $18,000 on it) would be paid off in 13 months and that our house (we've lived here 3 years with a 30 yr mortgage) would be paid off in 7 years!!! We are still working that plan, but with a few minor career set backs, our plan is on hold until we get caught back up. BUT...we still have a plan and that's the most important thing!
The Financial Peace University is the answer to all those money/budget questions you have! I tell everyone I know about it all the time and suggest EVERYONE go thru it! Also, if you don't want to take a class in your area, or they don't offer one, you can do what we did and take it online! It's not free, but that will be the smartest money you will ever spend! It will honestly change your life forever!!! I can't wait until we can scream I'M DEBT FREE!!!! Can you imagine not having credit card bills, house payments, car payments and so on and only have your monthly bills such as electricity, water, and gas? What could you do with all that extra cash???
So what are you waiting for??? Click HERE to sign up!

31 Days to a Better Grocery Budget: Stop Making Excuses and Commit to Change
by Crystal on March 1, 2010
“You can’t change anything when your ‘want-to’ is broken.” -Kevin Catalyst
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve received emails which say something like, “I really wish we could lower our grocery budget, but…”
You know what? If you start with that attitude, you’ll likely never succeed at having a better grocery budget. Sure, you might not be able to get your grocery budget down as low as someone else–maybe your family eats gluten-free, or maybe you eat all organic, or maybe you live in a rural area with only one over-priced store–but the truth is: you can lower your grocery budget.
But it will never happen until you stop making excuses and commit to change.
So I’m starting out this series by challenging you to set aside the negativity and commit to wholehearted willingness to change your mindset, your shopping habits, and quite possibly even your life.
Your grocery budget is likely never going to change until you are also willing to.
Has changing the way you think or shop changed your grocery bill?
Stay tuned for the next 5 parts!

The Envelope System Experiment
I found this GREAT series of posts on the Money Saving Mom website!!! I'll be sharing one every day!

Guest Post by Jenny Whitney
Paying with cash…we all did it at one point. When you are a child and are too young to have a credit card or debit card or checkbook, it is quite socially acceptable to pay with your allowance or hard-earned lemonade stand money.
At some point in our society, though, paying with cash becomes more unusual. I, like most Americans, have a credit card, and since we pay it off in full each month, I always thought I was being as responsible as possible with our finances.
But as I started to learn about deals, I became intrigued by this Envelope System that I read about (you can read about it here, here, and here). Could it possibly help me to be a better steward of the money we’ve been given?
I decided to give it a try–but on a smaller scale. Our budget for groceries and consumable household supplies (soap, detergent, toilet paper, etc.) is $40 per week and I do almost all of the grocery shopping, so that seemed like a logical place to start. So it began.
Here’s basically how it worked for me:
As I headed out to go grocery shopping on my first cash-only day, I stopped by the ATM and took out $40. I stuck it in an envelope and only used that to pay for all of our groceries. If I happened to purchase other items (gifts, clothing, etc.) while I was grocery shopping, I just asked the cashier to do separate transactions.
The following week, I added another $40 to the change from the previous week. And this same pattern has repeated now for about three months. It seems so simple–but it’s teaching me a lot about how I shop.
Here are six lessons I am learning:
1) No Mental Math Needed–Before trying out the envelope system, I would mentally try to add up how much I had spent at various stores in my head to see how much I had left. Well, if you’ve ever taught mental math, you know that estimation is an oft-used strategy. Needless to say, I often went over my budget using this strategy (without even realizing it until checking our statements later).
Many weeks, the amount was as little as $5, but that adds up to $260 over the course of a year–the equivalent of over 6 weeks of groceries on our budget! With the envelopes, figuring out how much I have left to spend is easy–just look in the envelope.
2) When You’re Done, You’re Done–It was so tempting for me to “borrow” from future weeks before trying out the envelope system. If I found a great deal, or just really wanted to make a particular recipe, I would just tell myself I would spend less the next week. Of course, when next week rolled around, I would have either forgotten or have convinced myself that I should go ahead and spend the full budgeted amount. Having a certain amount in cash has really helped me develop the discipline of saying, “Enough’s enough.”
3) Jell-O is Not a Food Group–Although I try to stockpile, there are certain staples that we need to get pretty regularly (like milk, eggs, fresh fruits, and vegetables, etc.). The first week that I tried out the envelope system, I realized something very important: If I do the “deals” first and then look to buy the staples, I’ll run out of money and have to decide between eggs and milk. Although I meal-planned and shopped off of a list before going cash-only, I now prioritize my list based on what we need and what we can do without.
4) What’s the OOP (really?)–Check out many deal forums and you’ll see a discussion on a “free” item, only to realize that you’ll get a gift card/Catalina/ECB/Register Reward when you purchase the item for the amount you spent. Before the envelope system, it was really easy to let myself believe that I was getting the item for free–but what I’ve learned is that when I pull out some money from that envelope, that’s money I no longer have to spend.
Although I might have a money replacement, I am often limited on where and when I can use it. That doesn’t mean I never do these deals, but it does help me to be much more aware of what my real out-of-pocket expenses are and I don’t justify going over my budget by saying that I’ll get a gift card back.
(Note: I know “rolling” gift cards and Catalinas makes for some great deals; I just think it was easy for me to forget they actually cost something to start with.)
5) Life Will Go On–If you are anything like me, discovering the world of coupons and deals was a turning point in my life (“You mean I don’t have to pay for toothpaste or razors ever again?”). I will admit that during the first few months, I went a bit overboard. I felt the need to do every deal and print out every coupon.
With the Envelope System, I am learning to let go of some of the deals and I am finding out that it is okay–we still have more than we need.
6) Rely on the Lord. I like being in control and couponing fed that feeling for me. I know more about “the systems” than most cashiers around here and I know what I am able to get for free or really cheap. I found that putting limitations on my couponing (through having to prioritize, miss deals, etc.) has helped me to remember the real Source of all that we have and consequently not worry about it.
So, what’s the bottom line? I tried out the envelope system thinking that I might save some money, and I have. More importantly, though, I’ve learned lessons that will help me to be a better steward of the money we have. I don’t know if the rest of our lives will transfer over to the Envelope System, but I know the things I’ve learned will.
Note: These are simply lessons I am learning; I don’t suggest that they are universal to all bargain shoppers. However, I would encourage you to try out a cash-only system (even if only for groceries) and see what you learn about yourself. You just might be surprised!
